Welcome to our new blog. Since we've had quite a few inquiries about the Somes Sound 12 1/2, the boat that we'll be building in a new two-week WoodenBoat School class, I thought we'd start with that.
The Somes Sound 12 1/2 is a completely new design, a descendent of the Herreshoff 12 1/2, just as the Haven 12 1/2 is. It was designed from the start for glued lapstrake construction—and excellent handling and performance.
Specifications: length, 15'9"; waterline, 12'6"; beam, 73"; draft, 18"; displacement, 1,389 lbs., sail area, 134 sq.ft.
For information about the class, please contact the WoodenBoat School.

Now that is a beautiful little boat. Nice work--but after getting halfway (so far) through your book I can see why it looks so, well, perfect. I'd like to see a lines drawing, when you get a chance to post one; I'm curious about how she looks on paper (and out of the water).
Which Wooden Boat was she featured in? I have many of the issues (the one magazine I will NOT give up!), but I cannot find a reference to the Somes Sound.
Are there study plans available for this craft? Perhaps a specs pdf. I thought I had read that it was shoal draft?
I also am very interested in seeing study plans for this boat. She's one of the most beautiful boats I have seen. Are they available, or will they be any time soon? Keep up the great work!
Sigh! Ever since I build Merlot (an Ellen) 9 years ago my daughter has been after me to make a 12 1/2 for grandchildren to learn sailing on. I may now be doomed!
